Leeds shock highflying Everton

Neil Warnock was forced into making a number of enforced changes due to injury with Paddy Kenny, Lee Peltier, and Adam Drury all missing out on the starting line up due to injury. Aidy White was one of those players recalled to the starting line-up and he fired Leeds ahead inside four minutes. The youngster showed great skill to beat two men in the middle of the park and was allowed to advance before drilling the ball home for a stunning individual strike. It was a wonderful effort, coming after Rodolph Austin won the ball, and was a great start for Leeds against the Merseysiders. United played some good stuff early on and looked to pressure the Premier League side. Everton were clearly unsettled after the goal and were on the back foot. The pressure won United a free-kick on the edge of the box shortly before the half-hour, and Michael Tonge sent the shot just wide of the upright. As the game headed towards half-time, United threatened to open up Everton again, and White forced another save out of visiting goalkeeper Jan Mucha. There was also an injury stoppage before the break when Jason Pearce needed bandaging up after a head collision. In first half stoppage time, Luciano Becchio thought he had scored with a header, but the ball was cleared off the line. United were good value for the lead, and started the second half on the front foot, El-Hadji Diouf drilling in a low early cross. Sam Byram also sent a shot just wide after more good work. But Everton did create a good chance shortly before the hour when Victor Anichebe did well out wide to pick out Steven Naismith, but his far post header was wide. Anichebe also sent a shot fizzing across the goal-line. When United came forward again, Austin won a free-kick on the edge of the box. When the set-piece was taken, Danny Pugh drilled it into the box, and Austin got the decisive touch to turn the ball home. Everton's response came when a long range shot from Marouane Fellaini called Jamie Ashdown into action for the first time, and the United keeper made a great block. But still United continued to press and Byram won a corner after more good work in the box. The visitors did throw themselves a lifeline with 10 minutes remaining, though, when Sylvain Distin looped a header over Ashdown from a free-kick into the box.David Moyes' men pushed forward desperately and were unlucky not to get a spot-kick when Victor Anichebe was bundled over by Jason Pearce, but Leeds deservedly clung on.

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock welcomed Paddy Kisnorbo into his starting line-up for the first time during pre-season while Paddy Kenny and Luciano Becchio also returned from minor injuries to take their places in the starting line-up for the trip to Preston North End.Kisnorbo started alongside Jason Pearce at centre back and the defenders had some early work to do as Preston started brightly - but it was Leeds who almost went in front inside five minutes when Luke Varney forced a good save from Thorsten Stuckmann. Preston also had to clear a powerful ball into the middle before Tom Lees could convert at the far post.
Kenny, who was wearing the captain's armband on his return, had more work to do than on his previous appearances during the early exchanges as Preston proved the biggest threat of pre-season. Ross McCormack had a free-kick deflected for a corner on the half-hour and the subsequent set play forced a save out of Stuckmann, but there was litte in the way of clear cut chances or goalmouth action during the opening 30 minutes.The breakthrough came just moments after the half-hour, though, when central defender Tom Lees showed great skill to bring the ball down just inside the penalty area before swivelling and smashing home a volley past Stuckmann.United also made a change during the first half with Kisnorbo, on his first appearance since late last year, playing the opening half hour or so before being replaced by Sam Byram. Lees reverted to centre-back, alongside Pearce. The game was the best test yet of the defence in terms of work, and the manager will have been more than pleased with solidity shown.The second half started in similar vein. Stuckmann made an early catch from Varney, but the home side continued to put United under a little pressure. But when the hosts did work an opening Jack King screwed a shot high and wide. And equaliser did come, though, 12 minutes into the half when John Mousinho scored with a good strike from just inside the box.The hour mark saw a re-shuffle for Leeds with a triple substitution that saw Danny Pugh, Adam Drury, and Andy Gray all introduced to proceedings.And it was 2-1 to Leeds on 66 minutes when Sam Byram scored his first goal in a senior shirt, Paul Green supplied the corner and Byram converted with a sweetly struck effort in front of over 2,500 travelling Leeds fans.Preston did come close to levelling again within a minute, but Kenny got down well to claw away a stooping header.United added a third with 10 minutes remaining, though. David Norris did well before the ball fell to Aidy White who scored with yet another good strike to leave Stuckmann with no chance.

Leeds United Squad Numbers Announced

Leeds United have announced the squad numbers for the coming season with six new recruits figuring in the first 11 numbers.Paddy Kenny has been given the number one shirt, Adam Drury wears three, Jason Pearce will wear five, Paul Green gets the number seven shirt, Rodolph Austin will be eight, and Luke Varney has been allocated 11.Tom Lees also steps into the first 11 numbers with the number four shirt while Luciano Becchio retains the number 10.Aidan White will wear 14 for the new season while Andy Gray is 18 and David Norris 19. Michael Brown will wear number 21 this season and Zac Thompson has been given the number 23 shirt.
Ross McCormack will wear his favoured number 44.

Aidy White Sign new deal with Leeds?

Following weeks of speculation over his future reports are emerging that Leeds defender Aidy White has signed a new three year contract with the club.White had been strongly linked with a move away from Elland Road with Championship rivals Derby County rumoured to be leading the chase for his signature.The news,if correct,will please Leeds United manager Neil Warnock  speaking earlier in the week about White said "It's like Aidy White, there's a couple of people spoken to him. I'd like Aidy to stay but we have to negotiate with his advisors and come up with an agreement that he's happy with as well. I don't think he's looking to leave."

UPDATE:Manager Neil Warnock was delighted when he confirmed the player's intentions before Friday's pre-season game at Farsley.
"Aidy is a young player who we have high hopes for and we're delighted he's agreed to a new deal," said the boss.
"He's good going forward and he's good defensively, and he's a big part of our plans here."

Derby Close to White Signing

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock does not expect Aidan White to play again this season after suffering an ankle injury in the defeat to Watford on Saturday. White was a doubt going into the game at the weekend after suffering an ankle injury at Millwall the previous weekend and he lasted just 45 minutes of the game against Watford after suffering a further knock.Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Warnock said, "It`s not too serious and there`s no break in it, that`s the good thing. But I`d be very surprised if he plays again this season. It`s a shame because he`s done well."The youngster who has come through the Leeds United academy is out of contract in the summer and is yet to agree a new deal with the club.He has been a regular in the Leeds side this season making 39 appearances and he has also broken onto the international scene having played in all 5 Republic of Ireland under 21 games this season.

Warnock Facing Defensive Crisis

Leeds manager Neil Warnock could be without three defenders for the midweek clash at Hull.Alex Bruce was already ruled out after missing the weekend defeat to Southampton with a hamstring strain, while both Aidy White and Leigh Bromby sustained knocks against the Saints and are rated very doubtful.Warnock said he will leave a decision on both White and Bromby until Tuesday afternoon.Paul Connolly and teenage pair Zac Thompson and Charlie Taylor could come into contention, while versatile midfielder Danny Pugh offers Warnock an alternative option.New signing Danny Webber made his debut for the club when replacing White early in the second half against Southampton and will be pushing for his first start.Striker Billy Paynter, out of favour under previous boss Simon Grayson, is another player hoping for a recall after returning to the bench at the weekend as Leeds chase only their second win in six league matches.

An injury-time goal from Alan Navarro handed Neil Redfearn his first defeat as Leeds United caretaker manager as the Whites lost 2-1 to Brighton at Elland Road.After a goalless first 75 minutes Saturday’s Npower Championship game exploded into life in the final quarter as Leeds went one down then hit back and appeared to have done enough to earn a point only for the late strike to leave them empty handed against one of their rivals for a play-off spot.There was little to choose between the teams, but United started well and should have been in front inside four minutes only for Luciano Becchio to head wide from a delicious Robert Snodgrass cross.The Whites were then denied a stonewall penalty on 12 minutes when Ross McCormack was felled in the box by Gordon Greer, but referee Graham Salisbury, who went on to have an awful game, denied the massive shout.Becchio headed over and McCormack was off target with a long range strike before Brighton finally got their first effort in on goal on 24 minutes, Navarro firing over from just inside the box.The visitors then showed why they were unbeaten in eight coming into the game as they had a good spell, but aside from a couple of straight forward saves for Andy Lonergan there was no huge threat on the home goal up to half-time.The second half got off to an exciting start as only desperate defence denied Becchio as he came in to meet a Snodgrass cross that squirmed out of the grasp of Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan.
At the other end, Joe Mattock saw his shot deflected just wide and Sam Vokes was denied twice in a minute by Lonergan, the first time with a superb save after the ex-United striker was left unmarked in the box to get his shot in.Leeds’ on loan right-back Adam Smith, who in the first half brought a save out of Brezovan, fired over when well placed and the game had really opened up. McCormack hit two strikes over and Tom Lees saw a header from a corner saved on the line by the keeper.But it remained scoreless until the introduction of Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith, who scored with his first touch after Lonergan was caught out by a near post corner.United’s reply was swift as Aidan White won a corner and Becchio then met Snodgrass’s delivery with a fine header that saw the ball creep in at the far post.Leeds went for the winner, but it was their opponents who got it in the first minute of injury-time as Navarro found space on the edge of the box and beat Lonergan with a low shot.

Redfearn Edging Closer to Elland Road Hot Seat?

Ken Bates says the Leeds United are in no rush to appoint a new manager and caretaker boss Neil Redfearn will be in charge for the next three games. Bates says Redfearn since taking over from Simon Grayson last week has impressed him and he will be given his opportunity to show his credentials whilst giving Leeds time to consider their options.Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Bates said, "We have decided that Neil will be in charge of the team for at least the next three games against Brighton, Coventry and Doncaster. "Those three games are all very winnable. We are only two points of the play-offs. Win those three games and we are back in the play-offs, then who knows."We have decided after the impressive start Neil has made, not just with the win but his presence and his attitude around Thorp Arch that he will be given his chance to demonstrate, a longer opportunity to demonstrate his abilities whilst we consider the matter carefully."Defender Aidan White is the latest Leeds United player to publicy give his backing to Redfearn."He's a good manager, he's experienced, I enjoyed playing under him for the under-18s so I know what he can do and what a good manager he is. Derby’s recent dominance of Leeds continued at Pride Park this afternoon as Jamie Ward’s second-half goal earned the Rams a sixth straight win over their Yorkshire rivals.Ward was on hand to convert after his initial 67th-minute shot had been parried by Andy Lonergan and, with Leeds unable to respond, Nigel Clough’s men hung on for what was just a second win in nine and a first clean sheet in 15.The full-time whistle marked a second straight defeat for Leeds and they are now three games without a win. Chairman Ken Bates has already turned the heat up on manager Simon Grayson, celebrating three years in charge today, by demanding promotion this season, but this was not the performance of a side destined for better things.A late flurry apart, United created no genuine chances and, although Derby offered up little more, they did signal some intent when Ward hit the post in the first half and could lay claim to being deserving winners.
Derby did the double over Leeds last season, with their 2-1 victory at Pride Park in April putting the skids on Leeds’ ultimately fruitless chase of a play-off place, and the away side started as though they had revenge on their minds.A slip from John Brayford allowed Aidan White a run which Shaun Barker halted, with Michael Brown drilling wide through a crowd of bodies from the subsequent corner.After surviving that early flurry, Derby settled and Nathan Tyson, making an injury-delayed first start since his summer move from Nottingham Forest, should have done better than warm Lonergan’s palms when he got free in the 15th minute.Leeds’ leading scorer Ross McCormack then fizzed in a 35-yard drive out of nothing that Frank Fielding had to scramble to turn away, before Ward went the closest out of anyone when he worked an opening and crunched an effort into the base of Lonergan’s post.The former Sheffield United winger got the better of Tom Lees and found half a yard inside the box, with the strike rebounding into the path of the onrushing Paul Green who should have done better than bundle it away from goal.It was then Leeds’ turn to go close, with Scotland winger Robert Snodgrass at the heart of their chances. His jinking run was halted by Gareth Roberts and, from the subsequent free-kick from the corner of the box, his stinging hit was tipped over by Fielding. His corner then found Luciano Becchio free but he headed over from six yards out.A scrappy 10-minute period preceded the half-time whistle but Derby emerged the better side after it, with Roberts slicing wide when a chance presented itself to him on the edge of the area.Patrick Kisnorbo then flicked a header over for Leeds and Fielding beat away an opportunist drive from Danny Pugh as the game opened up, but the pace of Derby’s attack always promised to cause problems and so it proved as they opened the scoring.Craig Bryson’s neat ball played Ward in on the left of the box and, although his first effort was smothered by Lonergan, the ball came free and he duly tucked in his third of the season.

Leeds response was not immediate and it took 20 minutes for them to test Fielding, with the former Leeds loanee keeping out a McCormack drive and then Adam Clayton’s follow-up effort. The keeper also did well to push out a Kisnorbo header, but Leeds’ charge had come too late.

Match report: Leeds United 0-1 Reading

Simon Grayson shuffled his pack for the visit of Reading. Andy Lonergan returned to the starting line-up for the first time since October after injury while Michael Brown and Ross McCormack also won recalls.Sadly, Lonergan's first taste of the action was to pick the ball out of the back of the net after Simon Church latched on to a long ball forward and lifted the ball home from the tightest of angles.It was a good finish, but a simple route to goal, and United were suddenly playing catch-up. The response was good with Leeds coming back out of the traps quickly and Reading were immediately put under pressure.But Reading went close again on the quarter-hour when Jobi McAnuff cut in from the right and blazed a shot wide of the mark.And Lonergan was called upon to make a good save low to his left on 20 minutes before Aidy White scrambled the ball away for a corner.On the half-hour, United won a free-kick when McCormack was brought down by McAnuff on the edge of the box, but the resultant set-piece was twice blocked by the Reading defence.The visitors did close go with a free-kick before the interval when Kaspars Gorkss headed over the top, and in the final moment of the half McCormack headed into the arms of Adam Federici.There were no changes for either side at half-time as United went in search of a route back into the game.The opening stages of the second period were a tight affair with United struggling to make any real headway against a well organised Reading side.United fashioned out a chance on 59 minutes when Danny Pugh, Robert Snodgrass, and Paul Connolly all combined well before a cheeky back-heel from Adam Clayton was smothered by Federici.On 65 minutes, Grayson made a triple change for United with Lloyd Sam, Andy Keogh and Mika Vayrynen all joining the fray.Keogh was the first sub to have any involvement when Paddy Kisnorbo headed on a Snodgrass free-kick, and the Irish international tried a spectacular effort which he couldn't quite pull off.There was a scramble on 74 minutes when both Luciano Becchio and Sam were denied by some good defending, but Reading's response was a quick break which put Leeds on the back foot.
Reading goalkeeper Federici had to react well to clear from Snodgrass on 80 minutes and Pugh followed up with a shot that was deflected wide, but the visitors remained strong and organised as the clock started to tick down.The final 10 minutes or saw offered little in the way of a route back for Leeds, as the visitors edged towards victory.Four minutes of stoppage time offered United a glimmer of hope, but there was to be no way back for Grayson's men as Reading picked up all three points.

White Rejects Leeds Contract Offer

Aidan White has turned down Leeds United’s initial offer of a new contract.The 20-year-old prospect is understood to have rejected a proposal put to him by the Elland Road club last month.Leeds made their approach to White with his current contract into its final year, and the club are keen to reach a deal with a player whose reputation has grown rapidly this season.White has come to the fore in United’s first team after two bit-part terms at Elland Road, and he earned his first under-21 cap with the Republic of Ireland in September.The four-year deal he signed in 2008 is set to expire next summer, however, and United recently moved to begin negotiations over improved terms.White is under the age of 24, meaning Leeds would be entitled to compensation were he to leave Elland Road for a rival English team next year, but United are reluctant to lose the services of one of their more successful academy products.White, too, is believed to favour the option of extending his deal with the Championship side but he is awaiting a second approach after refusing Leeds’ first offer.

The youngster made his 19th appearance of the season against Millwall on Saturday, taking up a position on the wing after a sequence of outings at left-back, and he has gradually established himself as a member of Simon Grayson’s starting line-up.

White emerged without warning or fanfare from United’s academy in August 2008 – then Leeds manager Gary McAllister predicted at the time that the teenager had a “great future ahead of him” – but it has taken him until this season to find regular favour under Grayson.

Snodgrass 50-50 for Rovers clash

Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass is hoping to shake off an ankle injury in time for Friday night's clash at Doncaster.Snodgrass was forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad last week due to a problem aggravated in Leeds' 1-0 win over Portsmouth in their last match, but the Scot could still play a part in the Yorkshire derby.
Manager Simon Grayson has no other new injury or suspension concerns and expects all his international players to be in contention.Central defender Darren O'Dea and striker Andy Keogh have reported back fit from Republic of Ireland duty while forward Mikael Forssell and midfielder Mika Vayrynen were scheduled to return to training on Thursday having featured for Finland in their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Hungary and Sweden.
Left-back Aidy White has been away with the Republic of Ireland Under-21s and fellow defender Charlie Taylor is hoping to be in the squad having been included in Noel Blake's England Under-19s squad for a tournament in France.

White:I don’t want to go out on loan again.

Aidy White admits he is desperate for his roaming days to be over after finding home comforts again at Leeds United.The season may have only just entered October but the pacey left-back has already made  progress with United in 2011-12, having already started more league matches in a season than he has done previously for his hometown club.Recognition has also arrived on the international front with White now an established part of the Ireland Under-21 squad, having switched his allegiances after previously featuring for England at under-19 level, making his debut for the boys in green in August and starting the Euro 2013 qualification double-header against Hungary and Turkey last month. White, who burst onto the scene with United in impressive style back in 2008, acknowledges the trick now is claiming permanent residency at left-back for the Elland Road club.That initial first-team spell earned the youngster a four-year deal, but he spent most of last-term at a temporary footballing home in Oldham Athletic, featuring 24 times for Paul Dickov’s League One side.White, who made just one Championship start for Leeds in 2010-11 and featured a mere three times in all competitions, conceded: “I’m glad I’ve now got this run of games behind me. It’s giving me confidence.“Previously, I’ve had to go out on loan and get the experience, but I feel I’ve come back stronger and, hopefully, I’ll hold down my spot in the team.“I can only play as well as I can and the rest is the manager’s choice, but I feel I’m doing okay.“Being in the first team is my concentration, I don’t want to go out on loan again. I want to play football for Leeds and no-one else, and that’s my aim.“I want to get as many games in as I can by the end of the season and make it a good one for me and the team.“You have to be patient. As a young lad, you can’t just expect to go straight into the team (and stay), you’ve got to understand that.“You do need experience and the manager asked me to get that on loan at Oldham. I did that and played 25-odd games and benefited, but I just want to push on now at Leeds and I feel ready.”

White, whose run of fixturess after coming in from the cold ahead of the 4-1 derby victory over Hull City in mid-August has only been briefly interrupted by a one-match ban following his harsh dismissal in the defeat at Ipswich Town, is clearly benefiting from a sense continuity.

Ross McCormack snatched an equaliser deep into stoppage time as Leeds stopped Brighton returning to the top of the npower Championship in a topsy-turvy encounter at the Amex Arena.The Seagulls were in action two nights previously against Liverpool in the Carling Cup and, despite manager Gus Poyet making five changes to his staring line-up, they looked weary as Leeds raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of first-half goals from Andy Keogh and McCormack.But a magnificent piece of individual skill from Craig Mackail-Smith reduced the arrears moments after the interval and the Scotland international then won the penalty from which Ashley Barnes netted his seventh goal of the season.Barnes turned provider as Mackail-Smith finished from close range with six minutes to play.But McCormack intervened to check a remarkable Brighton comeback.In the third minute, some slack marking from Danny Pugh – making his second debut for Leeds following his move from Stoke this week – might have given Brighton the lead.From Craig Noone’s corner Inigo Calderon escaped Pugh to head down for Barnes to thrash over.But Leeds were soon into their stride and, after Robert Snodgrass and Adam Clayton went close, the latter had a hand in the opening goal in the 18th minute.Full back Aidy White cut back from the left to Keogh, who found Clayton on the edge of the area. The midfielder’s shot was blocked but ricocheted into Keogh’s path and he slotted home his first Leeds goal.It was two six minutes later when McCormack turned to unleash a superb left-foot drive into the bottom corner from 25 yards for his eighth goal of the season.Less than two minutes after half-time Brighton were back in the contest. Mackail-Smith collected Barnes’ pass from the right and produced a sublime drag back and turn before coolly stroking into the bottom corner.Leeds were now the team under pressure and Leigh Bromby was the man to buckle, inexplicably scything down Mackail-Smith in the box with an hour played.
Barnes netted from the spot – then Calderon and Barnes combined to leave Mackail-Smith with a simple finish.

But Simon Grayson’s men dug deep and McCormack slammed home from Jon-athan Howson’s cutback.

Simon Grayson was forced into changing his starting line-up once again with Jonny Howson and Max Gradel both suspended, and Leigh Bromby injured.Aidy White made his first start of the season, at left-back, Darren O'Dea moved to centre-back, Ramon Nunez lined up on the left of a four-man midfield and Andy Keogh came in for his debut up front alongside Ross McCormack.Keogh, on loan from Wolves, almost made an immediate impact when he got a touch on a Robert Snodgrass free-kick and Paddy Kisnorbo saw his header cleared away. Moments later, Snodgrass tested Peter Gulacsi with a stinging shot.United also carved out an opening on the counter after Andy Lonergan collected a corner and moved the ball out quickly. Nunez raced away and fed McCormack, whose shot was deflected to safety by Joe Dudgeon.
Lonergan was again showing good command of his area and when Hull won a corner, Kisnorbo doing well, the keeper punched clear.United should have gone ahead on 15 minutes. Nunez beat Gulacsi from distance, but the shot came off the underside of the bar and McCormack was unable to keep his follow-up header down.

Moments later, McCormack was celebrating, though, when he got on the end of a Snodgrass cross and followed up his initial header, which was parried, to make it 1-0 to Leeds. It was United's first goal from open play in the league and was a well worked affair with the striker showing good instinct.
While McCormack was delighted to get off the mark, Keogh was also looking a threat and he curled a shot wide within three minutes of Leeds taking the lead.
United were dealt a blow on 21 minutes, however, when a cross came in from the Hull right and Tom Lees poked the ball into his own goal. Lees was unfortunate in that there was a Hull man coming in at the far post, and the defender had to make contact with the cross.
The equaliser saw the game level out somewhat after United's early domination, and Lonergan had to collect a couple of balls into the box after Hull got themselves in good wide positions.
United did have another opportunity leading up to half-time when Keogh again did well and McCormack saw his shot blocked by James Chester, but the goal did come moments later.

It was Lees who was the scorer when he blasted the ball home from the edge of the box on 40 minutes after Gulacsi failed to hold a ball into the box. It was the defender's first goal for the club.
United also had the ball in the net two minutes before the break when McCormack delivered a great finish - but his effort was ruled out for offside.
And Leeds had the ball in the net at the start of the second half and there was no doubt this time. Snodgrass was the scorer with a free-kick which he bent around the Hull wall.
It was the perfect start to the half and gave Leeds a two-goal cushion in a game for the first time since March.
Unsurprisingly, Hull looked to show some urgency after the goal, but United were looking fairly comfortable. When Aaron McLean got an opportunity in front of goal on the hour, Lonergan proved equal to the header and made another good save.
At the other end, United carved out a decent opening and Nunez fired over the bar from distance.
The Honduran made no mistake on 69 minutes when he got on the end of another flowing move forward and hammered the ball beyond Gulacsi to make it 4-1.
United were virtually home and hosed, although the visitors didn't give up the ghost and Matty Fryatt spooned a decent chance over the top for Hull. McLean also fired wide with a first time effort.
The final 15 minutes or so were a test for United to ensure no further goals were conceded as the visitors looked to salvage some pride from the contest.
But Leeds were always in with a chance of adding to the tally, and Snodgrass grazed the bar on 85 minutes with a shot from just outside of the box.
And that was virtually it as United eased towards a confidence boosting first league victory of the season, although Adam Clayton almost rounded off another fine performance at the heart of the midfield by adding a fifth, but he was denied by a Hull defender when the goal was beckoning.

Leeds set to shuffle the Pack

Leeds United will be without four players due to international commitments for tonight’s Carling Cup first-round derby with Bradford City at Elland Road.Robert Snodgrass and Max Gradel are missing, with the former part of the Scotland squad due to take on Denmark at Hampden Park in a friendly tomorrow.
Gradel, handed his senior bow by the Ivory Coast in early June – coming on as a sub in the African Cup of Nations qualifiying win against Benin – will be hoping to claim his second full cap in the Elephants’ friendly against Israel at the Ivorian capital of Abidjan, also tomorrow.
Darren O’Dea, who joined the club late last week on a season-long loan from Glasgow Celtic, is unavailable with the defender in the Republic of Ireland squad for their clash with Croatia in Dublin tomorrow evening.
Another who has been called up by the boys in green is United teenager Aidy White, with the Horsforth lad handed a call-up last week ahead of Ireland U21s’ clash with their Austrian counterparts, which takes place in Sligo this evening (6pm).It’s White’s first call-up to the squad with the 19-year-old recently switching allegiance to Ireland after previously making his England U19 debut as a sub against the Czech Republic in March 2009.

Ben Parker is tipped to start at left-back, while Ramon Nunez, Lloyd Sam, Billy Paynter and Leigh Bromby could also be handed starts, with Alex Bruce and Mike Grella also in contention.

City could again be without full-back and former captain Simon Ramsden, who missed Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Aldershot because of a calf strain, tonight.

Centre-half Steve Williams is expected to feature after shrugging off a thigh injury and could replace Lee Bullock, injured at the weekend. Ritchie Jones is also in the reckoning following injury for City, set to hand a debut to Spurs loan keeper Oscar Jansson.

United will make a decision on trialists Felix Luz – who scored a hat-trick for a United XI against Farsley on Saturday – Dennis Grote and Ibrahim Maaroufi shortly, possibly at some point today or tomorrow.

Motherwell 1 Leeds United 2

Having beaten Falkirk in midweek, United manager Simon Grayson was again looking to utilise his full squad for the game against SPL side Motherwell.And it was Leeds who created the first opening of the game when Lloyd Sam sent over a cross which Billy Paynter puled back across goal inside the first minute.It was a lively opening to the game and Paul Rachubka was also called into action inside the opening five minutes to make a decent save at the near post after good build-up play by the home side.Motherwell midfielder Keith Lasley received a stern talking to early in the game following an altercation that was ended by an intervening Paddy Kisnorbo.Leeds were backed by a terrific away following at Fir Park, too, giving some atmosphere to the game.Michael Brown and Adam Clayton were the sitting central midfielders for United with Jonny Howson being given licence to play in an advanced role.And Clayton was the instigator of what appeared to be the opening goal. The youngster whipped in a cross from the left and Paynter poked the ball home from close range - but the effort was ruled out by an offside flag.
Moments later, Motherwell mounted a raid down their left and Steven Hammell smashed a shot against the post after cutting in at an angle.
As the half wore on the rain started to fall, making the pitch greasy, and two Motherwell defenders may have struggled a little when they combined to send Sam sprawling on 34 minutes to win a penalty for United.
Ross McCormack, Scotland international and one-timer Motherwell favourite, stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his effort was saved by Darren Randolph, who dived low to his left.
Motherwell had an opportunity themselves after Kisnorbo was somewhat harshly penalised on the edge of the box, but the resultant free-kick was over the head of Paul Rachubka and over the bar.
The hosts did get their noses in front on 39 minutes, though, when Chris Humphrey found space on the right and his low cross was converted by Jamie Murphy who slid the ball home at the far post.
Just over 60 seconds later, McCormack had the ball in the net at the other end after good work by Sam, but the whistle had already gone for an infringement.
And shortly before half-time, Aidy White embarked on a run that saw him carry the ball a full 50 yards before his pull-back cross was cleared over his own bar by Motherwell defender Shaun Hutchinson.
Grayson made four changes at half-time with Alex Bruce, Ben Parker, Max Gradel and Rob Snodgrass all being handed run-outs. The rain also returned with vengance at the start of the second period as the game kicked off in a torrential downpour.
The home side started brightly and after Paul Connolly cut out one cross, Alex Bruce headed away a corner from underneath his own bar.
But Bruce was involved at the other end moments later when he had a header turned over the bar after McCormack saw a shot turned wide.
Snodgrass was also denied with a header, following a good cross from Gradel after Paynter had charged down a poor clearance.
Gradel threatened again on 60 minutes when he had a shot deflected to Randolph in the Motherwell goal, but the home side came storming back up the park and Rachubka showed good command of his box by coming out to punch the ball clear.
Zac Thompson was next to be denied after a move he started and finished. He released McCormack with a good ball and collected the return before being denied by Randolph. Thye Motherwell goalkeeper also pushed the resultant corner over the top under pressure from Snodgrass.
But the next corner proved decisive as Randolph failed to collect and Bruce was on hand to convert from close range to make it 1-1.
Motherwell responded when Rachubka had to save a Michael Higdon header and on the break Thompson saw a shot deflected wide for United. The hosts again failed to deal with the set-play and Randolph had tol be alert to make an instinctive block to deny Bruce once again.
Moments later, United were in front, though, courtesy of a stunning solo effort from Ramon Nunez. The Honduran showed great skill to weave his way through on goal before working an opening for himself to slip the ball home to make it 2-1.
Having surrendered leads like this last season, Grayson was looking for his troops to close the game out and both Rachubka and Parker made good clearances when Motherwell came forward.
Gradel almost created a third, but was denied by a good challenge when McCormack was waiting in the middle, while at the other end substitute goalkeeper Alex Cairns warmed his hands by collecting a free-kick, curled in from just outside of the area. Cairns also made another decent save late on.
And that proved to be the last real action of what was another impressive pre-season outfit as United ended the week in Scotland by recording a second successive victory north of the border.
