Grayson axed

Leeds manager Simon Grayson has been sacked after just over three years in charge.

Grayson, 42, who replaced Gary McAllister as manager of his boyhood club in December 2008, has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks as Leeds have fallen out of the top six in the npower Championship.

A heavy 4-1 home defeat to Birmingham last night appears to have been the final straw for chairman Ken Bates, who is now in the hunt for his fifth Leeds manager during his seven years at the club.

Leeds Land Rogers

Leeds United have reached an agreement for United States international Robbie Rogers and are now waiting on a work permit. The 24-year-old winger caught the Whites' eye during a recent trial and has now been offered the opportunity to further his career in England.Rogers was most recently on the books of MLS side Colombus Crew, with over 100 appearances made for the club during a four-year spell. He is, however, eager to test himself in Europe and is hoping the relevant paperwork will be processed without a hitch.Leeds boss Simon Grayson believes Rogers could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for the club, with the Whites prepared to throw him straight into the first-team picture at Elland Road."We're delighted to have agreed a deal with Robbie," he told the club's official website.

"He's been training with us and he came to (the FA Cup game at) Arsenal to get a feel of the group.

"He has been playing in the MLS where he has done well, he wants to continue his career in Europe, and we believe he will make an impact here.

"As soon as the work permit business is complete he will be an immediate part of our plans and have an opportunity with the first team."

McCormack Rescues Leeds

Ross McCormack struck what could prove to be one of the most vital goals of Simon Grayson’s time in charge of Leeds United five minutes into injury time, as the Whites overturned a one-goal deficit to come from behind and beat 10-man Burnley.
Going into the game with a three-game losing run behind him and a very public demand of promotion from outspoken owner Ken Bates hanging over his head, some could have been forgiven for writing Grayson’s Elland Road obituary when his men fell behind to Charlie Austin’s 69th-minute opener.

But the under-pressure boss was given a leg-up by Brian Easton’s own goal with four minutes left and, when it looked as though he would have to take a draw against 10 men back to his chairman, McCormack pounced on Lee Grant’s fumble of Andros Townsend’s long-range strike to send his manager on an emotional charge of celebration down the touchline.

The end result was perhaps harsh on Burnley, who had looked set to record an eighth win in nine games when Austin scored - his goal coming some 40 minutes after Kieran Trippier had been sent off for two bookings, both of which came for fouls on lively debutant Townsend.

But it was Leeds who had the last word, with top scorer McCormack coming off the bench to grab his 12th and most important of the season.

Grayson said after Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Barnsley that some players may never play for him again and he stayed true to his word, making five changes, although it was Burnley who started better with Austin spurning a one-on-one chance.

Leeds then lost captain Patrick Kisnorbo to a 14th-minute knee injury that forced Grayson into another reshuffle, and he was thankful to see Andy Lonergan turn Austin’s opportunistic 25-yard drive over as he changed his side around.

Burnley began to fade after that second Austin effort and Townsend in particular opted to try and swing momentum in favour of the home side. Tripper was the man in his sights and twice in the space of six minutes he torched past the full-back, with referee Mike Brown brandishing a yellow card on both occasions, with the second one perhaps only worthy of a warning.

In between the two bookings Townsend ran at the Burnley defence and drilled wide but, after that and Trippier’s dismissal, both sides seemed without idea and limped through to the interval.

Leeds displayed a shade more invention at the start of the second half, with Ramon Nunez twice putting in crosses that caused Grant problems and Townsend fizzing a strike over from the corner of the area.

Townsend was relentless in his pursuit of whoever was occupying Burnley’s right-back berth and, after he drew a foul and a booking from David Edgar, Leeds mounted their first real spell of pressure which saw Brian Easton head away from under his own bar and Darren O’Dea then clip the top of the goal with a looping header.

Ben Mee then received the fourth yellow card of the afternoon awarded for a foul on Townsend, and from the subsequent free-kick, Nunez worked Grant for the first time.

Leeds rookie Zac Thompson then saw a volley scrape past Grant’s post from 25 yards, before Austin went one better at the other end, giving Burnley the lead out of nothing.

A long ball from Dean Marney fell to him in the box and, as the Leeds defence held back, he snapped at a half-volley on the turn and found Lonergan’s bottom corner with his 10th of the season.

Leeds were initially stunned, but got a fortuitous break when Easton turned Adam Clayton’s corner beyond Grant with four minutes left and then, when a draw looked on, McCormack pounced to offer his boss some welcome relief.

Townsend’s 25-yarder should have been a regulation save for Grant, but the keeper shelled the ball and McCormack did the rest.

Leeds Land Townsend

Tottenham youngster Andros Townsend has joined Leeds United on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old, who has not made his Premier League debut yet, has previously been out on loan with Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient, MK Dons, Ipswich Town, Watford and Millwall.

He played regularly in the north London club’s Europa League campaign, making six appearances and scored against Irish side, Shamrock Rovers.

“Andros is a quality young player with proven experience at this level and we’re delighted to be able to bring him to Leeds,”Leeds manager Simon Grayson told the club’s official website.

Snodgrass out after appendix surgery

Leeds United winger Robert Snodgrass has been sidelined for several weeks after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix.Snodgrass had an operation on Thursday afternoon and has been ruled out of Saturday’s match at Barnsley. He is likely to be missing from action for much of January.Manager Simon Grayson told the club’s official website: “It wasn’t something that was planned but we were hoping to keep it quiet until after the teamsheets had been exchanged at Barnsley in order not to alert our opponents.“We’re not putting any timescale on things but hopefully he won’t be absent for too long a period.”

Ben Parker set for Loan Move

Simon Grayson has confirmed that Leeds United plan to send Ben Parker out on loan next month, allowing the left-back to step up his comeback after two-and-a-half years of injury problems.
Parker will be made available on a temporary basis in the January transfer window amid fresh hope that the worst of his fitness concerns are behind him.The 24-year-old was forced to consider quitting the game earlier this season after suffering a set-back during his appearance in United’s Carling Cup win over Bradford City in August.Parker has endured a series of injuries and operations since straining a hamstring far back in 2009, but he is training with Leeds’ senior squad again and has taken part in a number of reserve and youth-team fixtures. His prospects of a swift first-team recall are slim, however, with his match fitness in need of improvement and Aidan White firmly established as United’s regular left-back, and Grayson will intends to loan him to another Football League club in the coming weeks. The United manager said: “I’d have thought that would be a good option for him and for us.“He’s had such a long time out and it was good to see him come through another reserve game last week. If he can maintain his training before the window opens, there might be a couple of options for him to go out on loan.

“It’s important – vital really – that he starts playing football again, for his benefit and our benefit.”

Speaking last week, Parker, who made his senior debut for Leeds more than four years ago, said: I’d be stupid to think I’ll sit around and bide my time at Leeds or that the manager’s going to throw me in.

“I know he’s not going to throw me in – it’s too much of a risk for him.

“I need to go out on loan and prove myself, to show him that I can play games without getting injured and prove to the footballing world that I haven’t disappeared.

“Hopefully it’ll be a possibility to go out on loan for a month in January, to get some games played and then take it from there.”

Leed United Facing Tough Test

Leeds United will be bidding to scale an emotional backdrop to tonight’s npower Championship clash at Nottingham Forest to get their promotion drive back on track.Still stunned by the sudden death of former player Gary Speed, Leeds and their Forest hosts will wear black armbands in the player’s memory and there will also be a minute’s applause agreed by Forest before the kick-off. Boss Simon Grayson, who signed professional forms with the Whites 25 years ago on the same day as Speed, said: “Speedo was a true friend and a very, very popular man.

“He was such a popular person and this is a difficult time for everyone.”

Grayson has to try to lift his own spirits and that of a club thrown into mourning by the death, at the age of 42, of Speed.

And he has to also inspire his men to quickly erase the memory of their dispiriting Yorkshire derby defeat at home to Barnsley, which left the Whites totalling a mere two points from their last four games on home turf.

In contrast, Leeds’ spirited away form has been the reason why they remain in fifth place and well among the promotion pack.

Honduran striker Ramon Nunez will be pushing for a start after he came on for the ineffective Sam against Barnsley, while Andy Keogh will seek the same after he replaced Luciano Becchio, whose form has dipped.

Speed loss rocks Grayson

Leeds manager Simon Grayson has expressed his shock at the loss of "a true friend" following the death of Gary Speed.Speed, 42, who began his career at Elland Road in 1988 and made nearly 250 appearances before moving on to Everton in 1996, was found dead at his home in Chester on Sunday morning.
Grayson, signed schoolboy forms at Leeds on the same day as Speed, told the club's official website: "It is an unbelievably sad day. Speedo was a true friend and a very, very popular man.
"Our sympathies are with Louise, his children, his dad, and all his family. We signed on the same day and played in the youth and reserve teams together.
"We also did all our coaching badges together. He was a good friend and this is a very sad day.
"Gary was such a popular person and this is a hard time for everybody."

Grayson Praises Leeds United Fans

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson says the fans once again played a big part in the side`s comeback at Burnley. Grayson commented in the week that it was the large following from Leeds last season, which spurred the side on to come back from two goals down and win 3-2.Leeds once again had to turn around a half time deficit and Grayson said the fans once again played their part in helping Leeds turn things around.Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Grayson said, "There were 4,000 Leeds fans that we were kicking to in the second half, but ultimately the players knew what they needed to do.The fans were very positive to the team, in that we kept going and it`s a special place to play because again at half time you could hear the fans cheering and chanting and obviously it motivates the team." Jay Rodriguez had given Burnley a half time lead but two goals from Robert Snodgrass in the final sixteen minutes secured Leeds sixth win in their last seven visits to Turf Moor that had Grayson commenting, "You wouldn`t mind coming hear every week when you get the result."Leeds continue to take a large following to all their away games this season and they have now won four of their last five games on the road.

O'Brien Disgrace

Leeds manager Simon Grayson insists Andy O'Brien will never represent the club again after refusing to play in their dramatic comeback victory at Burnley.O'Brien has made just three npower Championship appearances this season and has been targeted by the Leeds boo-boys but Grayson previously claimed he would not consider allowing the defender to leave on loan. However, the Leeds boss admits O'Brien no longer has a future at the club after the 32-year-old former Newcastle and Bolton man told him on Friday he never wanted to appear for Leeds again.''Andy O'Brien came to me on Friday and said that he no longer wanted to play for this football club,'' said Grayson after the 2-1 win at Turf Moor.''It came as a shock on Friday but he won't play for this football club again as long as I am here.''It came as a shock, especially after I have backed him publicly and privately over the last few weeks.

Grayson:McCormack and O'Brien Going Nowhere

Simon Grayson claimed today that he was unaware of interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers in Ross McCormack and categorically dismissed the possibility of Leeds United loaning Andy O’Brien to West Ham United.Grayson said he had received no contact from Wolves about McCormack’s situation amid strong suggestions that the Scotland international is on the Premier League club’s list of January targets. The United manager also ruled out any chance of West Ham securing a temporary deal with centre-back O’Brien by stating that the defender would be present at Elland Road after the Football League’s emergency loan deadline passes next week.McCormack’s reputation has grown after nine league goals in the first two months of the season established him as the Championship’s top scorer.Grayson said: “He’s one of the best goalscorers in the Championship.“He’s not been scoring in the last couple of games but his all-round game’s been good. He’s only a goal or two away from starting another run like he did at the start of the season.”O’Brien, meanwhile, is back in the fold at Elland Road after a long spell out of favour and Grayson said: “I won’t be letting him out on loan. There are certain players who’ll be available on loan but Andy won’t be one of them.”

Arsenal Looking at Leeds Youngster

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to launch a move for Leeds United prospect Monty Gimpel, a player the Whites managed to snap up ahead of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool earlier this year.Leeds boss Simon Grayson managed to snap up the promising young defender after assuring him that first-team football would be just around the corner at Elland Road.Gimpel joined Leeds under the assumption that whilst the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool were more reputable clubs, the ability to play his football in the Championship rather than a reserve team would only enhance his career. However, Gimpel is still yet to feature for the Leeds United first team, despite putting in a series of impressing performances for the reserves.Whilst Gimpel’s agent has been quick to counter the suggestions that he is now primed for a move to Arsenal, the opportunity to move to the Premier League could prove too tempting to refuse.

Leeds to land McCarthy

According to reports On Skysports.com Leeds are set to sign Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy on a month's loan.Whites boss Simon Grayson confirmed he was in the market for a new shot-stopper after Paul Rachubka's nightmare display in Wednesday's 5-0 home drubbing by Blackpool. The former Manchester United trainee was hauled off at half-time against his old club after three blunders led to the Elland Road club falling 3-0 down, with teenager Alex Cairns coming on in his place. Now Grayson has moved swiftly to bring in additional cover with a move for Reading youngster McCarthy poised to be agreed. The 21-year-old has made just one Carling Cup appearance for the Royals this season but is highly regarded at the Madejski Stadium and has had previous spells out on loan with Brentford, Yeovil, Aldershot and Cambridge.

Should the deal be completed in time, McCarthy is expected to go straight into the starting XI for Sunday's testing Championship trip to Leicester.

Grayson Peps up Snodgrass

Robert Snodgrass is enjoying a new lease of life after a career-boosting chat with Leeds boss Simon Grayson. The former Livingston winger fell so far below the high standards he had set since moving south of the border that Grayson gave him some advice after Leeds’ 3-0 Carling Cup defeat against Manchester United last month. Some fans were convinced that talk of a possible move into the Premier League in the summer had unsettled the man renowned for making asses of full-backs and laying on a procession of crosses for the club’s strikers. While Max Gradel was sold to St Etienne for an undisclosed fee, Leeds rejected a £3.5million offer from Norwich for Snodgrass, who remained at Elland Road where he looked a shadow of his former self in the early weeks of the season. Now the tricky Scotland international faces Leeds’ bogey side Cardiff with Grayson drooling over the winger’s improvement. The Leeds boss said: “I had a chat with him after the Manchester United game and I didn’t hold back.“I told him, ‘You are more concerned with what is happening all over the pitch instead of concentrating on what you need to do. Affect the game and everyone else will concentrate on doing the jobs they are supposed to be doing’.Snod cares passionately about the game, the team and how we can get good results – but maybe that was affecting his own performances on the pitch.“Since the Manchester United game he has been an absolute joy.“His work-rate, closing down and quality of delivery have been unbelievable recently.“Players are not daft. They realise when things are not going for them, but Snod has analysed his game and wants to get better and better.”Snodgrass, 24, scored seven goals last season when Leeds finished seventh, missing out on a play-off place by just three points.
But his only strike so far this time came back in August in a 4-1 trouncing of Yorkshire rivals Hull City.
He will be especially keen to put that right against Cardiff, who haven’t lost at Elland Road for 28 years and thrashed Leeds 4-0 in the corresponding game last term. Also looking to hit the target is top scorer Ross McCormack, who grabbed 25 goals in 75 league games for the Welshmen before joining Leeds in August last year.

McCormack has ten goals to his name in all competitions this season but after a purple patch of nine in eight league games, the hitman has drawn a blank in his last three outings for Grayson’s side.

Grayson:Second place or third place would be nice

Simon Grayson has  urged his side to maintain their fine run of form at Birmingham City this evening.Grayson's men head to St Andrew's to take on the former Premier League side, knowing victory could secure third spot in the Championship. But Birmingham are slowly finding some form of their own and are six games unbeaten in all competitions. Their last home league game saw a 2-0 win against Leicester while they have also won at both Maribor and Bruges in the Europa League."The games have been coming thick and fast for them with the Europa League in there," said Grayson."They are playing catch-up in terms of the league a little bit, but they are a team who will be looking to be up there."They have kept a lot of players from last season and they have added some of Premier League quality so they do have a good squad and have some real quality in it.
"Chris Hughton sets his teams up to work hard and has them organised, so we know it will be a tough test for us."But Leeds go into the game on the back of a seven game unbeaten run that has included back-to-back away successes at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United."There's a lot of confidence at the moment," said Grayson. "Individuals have confidence and we are playing with a lot of confidence as a team.
"Second place or third place would be nice, but it's in May that league positions count."Wednesday's game is between two teams who both want to be up there and it has the hallmarks of a good game. We're looking at it as another opportunity to pick up three points."

Lonergan Out For Six Weeks

Leeds have confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Andy Lonergan will be out for six weeks.Manager Simon Grayson confirmed that Lonergan fractured a finger in last week’s win at Doncaster RoversThe former Preston North End keeper has been sent for surgery and is unlikely to return until early December, robbing Grayson of one of United’s more influential players.Grayson said: “He’s going to be out for six weeks. He’s had an operation on the finger which he fractured on Friday night. It’s a blow for us and it’s a blow for the lad but I’ve got faith in Rachubka. He’s a keeper I can trust and who won’t let me down again.”Rachubka was a peripheral figure in a one-sided Championship game until his fumble in the third minute of injury-time handed Coventry a point and denied Leeds a third successive league win.Grayson said: “Paul’s frustrated but he’s a strong character. He’d had nothing to do all night but the game should have been over by half-time anyway with the opportunities we had.

Grayson Rallying Call

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson is challenging his players to put together a long unbeaten run to get themselves into the promotion pack.Leeds made it four games unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth in their last game and in a wide open championship, Grayson is aware that any club that can put an unbeaten run together can stay in the hunt for promotion.Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Grayson said, "You`ve got to be consistent in your own results and put together runs of eight or ten games unbeaten, just to keep you in the pack."If that happens and you stay up there until Christmas then people can get excited because it gives you the springboard for the rest of the season."Leeds put together a run of twelve games without defeat between the end of October and the New Year last season that saw them occupy one of the automatic promotion spaces after their 2-0 home win over leaders Queens Park Rangers in December.Despite only one defeat in their next eight games, too many draws proved costly for Leeds. This was followed up with just win from their next eight games and in the ultra competitive championship, it proved costly as they eventually finished one place outside the play off positions in seventh.

Match Report Leeds 1 Portsmouth 0

Simon Grayson welcomed Paul Connolly back to his starting line-up for the first time since August on a day when the weather was more suited to the height of summer than the 1st of October.Leigh Bromby dropped to the bench with Tom Lees switching to centre-back. Paddy Kisnorbo missed out due to illness. The recalled Connolly almost carved out the first chance of the game when he sent in a good cross from the right, and Joel Ward had to clear the danger.Another cross from the right caused problems when Ross McCormack was denied after a good ball by Robert Snodgrass. That proved the cue for successive corners, and United went in from the second of those.Snodgrass was the provider with a good delivery and Danny Pugh found space to head home into an empty goal to put Leeds ahead.Snodgrass was causing all sorts of mayhem down the right and his next mazy run resulted in a low ball being drilled just wide of the upright. The opening half-hour was all Leeds, and Pugh went close again when he had a shot deflected wide. But the visitors did carve out an opening when Andy Lonergan was called upon to make a terrific save to claw a Greg Halford header away. When the ball was pumped back in, Halford again got up well, and his header rattled the woodwork.

But Leeds responded with McCormack sending a in a low ball and Tal Ben Haim had to clear over his own bar.
It was a good opening half from Leeds, who consistently looked a threat, particularly down the right with Snodgrass, and McCormack causing problems.
Adam Clayton was also busy in the middle of the park and he tried his luck with one effort which flew over the top.
Portsmouth offered little, but Jason Pearce led claims for a penalty when he went down as a ball came into the box, and Lonergan had to get down well to save one free-kick which was driven past the wall.
United's lead was well deserved at the interval, but the opening moments of the second period were always going to be vital in the quest for a fourth successive home league win.
And it was the visitors who opened up brightly, Liam Lawrence looking lively on the right, but Leeds were soon back on the front and Jonny Howson almost picked out Clayton with a ball into the box.
United fashioned out a half-chance on the hour when Pugh sent in a decent cross for Keogh, but the striker had to react under pressure and turned his shot wide.
With 22 minutes remaining, Grayson made his first change, introducing Luciano Becchio for Keogh.
The second half was more of a war of attrition than anything with little in the way of any clear cut chances being created. Leeds were holding the upper hand as the game entered the final 15 minutes, though.
Joel Ward did lift a shot over the bar for the visitors on 75 minutes after the visitors threatened and moments later Grayson made his final changes, bringing on Finnish duo Mika Vayrynen and Mikael Forssell for the impressive Snodgrass and McCormack.
As the game headed towards the final whistle, Forssell and Becchio linked up well and the Finn forced a great save from Stephen Henderson to thwart a certain goal.
Forssell also picked out Howson in the first minute of stoppage time, but Henderson got down well to deny the United captain.
At ther other end, Lonergan had to scramble back to tip over an audacious attempt from Lawrence and United had to deal with the corner before going on to record a fourth successive home league win, and a first clean sheet of the season.

Grayson bemoans defensive frailties

Leeds manager Simon Grayson has admitted to his growing frustration at being unable to find a solid central defensive partnership this season.Grayson's side have conceded 15 goals in eight league matches so far, an average of almost two per game, and Grayson looked on in dismay as they let slip a two-goal lead at Brighton. The Leeds boss said: "At the moment I've got five centre-halves who've all played at the highest level - [Darren] O'Dea, [Leigh] Bromby, [Andy] O'Brien, [Paddy] Kisnorbo and [Alex] Bruce.
"Somewhere down the line I've been trying to get the right partnership. After 45 minutes I thought we'd got one, but once again we went to sleep."I keep changing personnel around and working hard on the training ground and when you're 2-0 up you should be capable of dealing with whatever's thrown at you."
Grayson drafted in Danny Pugh, equally at home at left-back or midfield, in time to make his debut at Brighton, but said nothing to suggest he would be dipping back into the loan market after the 3-3 draw at the Amex Arena.

Match Preview: Leeds United v Man United

Leeds United defender Patrick Kisnorbo serves a one-match ban following his sending off against Bristol City.Manager Simon Grayson may rotate his side given that they play Brighton in the Championship on Friday.Manchester United are set to play a host of youngsters such as Paul Pogba and Will Keane.
Experienced strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen are expected to feature, but Chris Smalling has been ruled out with a groin injury.Manchester United travel across the Pennines with revenge against bitter rivals Leeds at the forefront of their minds.Embarrassing defeats have been thin on the ground during Sir Alex Ferguson's near 25-year tenure as Manchester United boss, but the 1-0 home defeat by Leeds in the FA Cup third round 18 months ago left a sour taste for him and Red Devils' fans.
Jermaine Beckford wrote his name into Elland Road folklore with the only goal in that game, and Leeds boss Simon Grayson has a squad of players desperate to get the chance to do something similar on Tuesday night.
Grayson would dearly love this fixture to be played twice a season in the Premier League and while his focus is solely on promotion to the top flight, he knows how much another victory over Manchester United would mean to every single Leeds fan.
