Leeds United manager Simon Grayson is set to make an approach to take Newcastle United midfielder Alan Smith back to Elland Road on loan. With Leeds currently 4th in the Championship, Grayson has been given the go-ahead to strengthen as the club make a push for promotion to the Premier League.
Smith made 228 appearances for Leeds United during his six seasons with the club and left after relegation in 2004 joining rivals Manchester United. Injuries hampered Smith at Old Trafford, restricting him to just 61 appearances in three seasons. In August 2007 Newcastle paid £6million to take him to St.James’ Park
The 30 year old former England international has not figured regularly in the St James’ Park first team this season, making 8 starts and 3 substitute appearances. A return to Leeds and first team football could prove very tempting for the Rothwell born midfielder.
It is not the first time Leeds have tried to lure the player back on loan, Dennis Wise tried and failed in November 2006 when Smith was making his way back from breaking his leg, having had 12 months out the game. Smith decided to stay at Old Trafford on that occasion.
