Alan Smith in line for shock return to Leeds

According to Talksport radio Alan Smith could be in line for a shock return to Leeds United.Smith has been told he can leave his current club Newcastle United as they are keen to get him of the wage bill.Smith, 30, left Leeds for Manchester United, which is an issue for some fans .A possible return for Smith has Leeds fans divided, although manager Grayson does not believe the Red Devils factor comes into the equation and that he will sign good players regardless.Speaking in January, when rumours of Smith joining Leeds during the transfer window were rife,Leeds United manager Simon Grayson said "He’s a good player and forget any affinity he has with the club in the past,”.“If you get a player of Alan Smith’s ability then obviously you would have to be interested. We are in the market to make us better.”“People would have different opinions on bringing back any ex-player, whether it’s Smith, Woodgate or Harry Kewell. I’ll sign players based on what they can do for the club.”
The 30-year-old, born in West Yorkshire, played 172 times for the club before moving to bitter rivals Manchester United in 2004 - when Leeds were relegated from the Premier League - in a £7million deal.
