BECCHIO DEAL HOPES

United are hopeful of sorting out a new deal for in-form striker Luciano Becchio, chairman Ken Bates stressed today.

Talking to Yorkshire Radio, he described the Argentine striker as a nice guy - and a goalscoring machine.

"We have no real problems with Luciano," he said. "He wants to stay at the club and the only thing is, his agents live elsewhere and we have language problems. But we are hoping to resolve that."
Becchio is currently in a rich seam of goalscoring form, having netted 11 goals this season, with five of those having been scored in United's last two home games.

The chairman said he felt proud that Elland Road had been the scene of the only Yorkshire game that had managed to survive the bad weather last weekend.
"I don't think we have had the publicity or the recognition for that achievement. The fact of the matter is we put our game on when other so-called bigger clubs didn't and couldn't.
"It is a great tribute to the entire staff at Elland Road, and the council and outside agencies who made sure that not only was the game on but, just as importantly, all the external roads and walkways and all round the area of Elland Road and Lowfields Road were safe as well.

"We don't take any risks. We don't leave anything to chance. We had our own pile of grit and salt and sand since autumn to make sure that in the event of any problems we were adequately prepared.
"And, of course, we have undersoil heating, which quite a few Premiership clubs don't have," he added.
