Villa chase Johnson

Aston Villa have joined the hunt for highly-rated Leeds midfielder Bradley Johnson.

The 23-year-old, who has been linked with a host of suitors in this month's transfer window, saw his stock rise as he fired home a stunning goal during the Lilywhites' 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

Johnson, who is out of contract in the summer, has yet to agree a new deal with Leeds after turning down a three-year extension in November.

Villa are the latest Premier League outfit to show an interest in the midfielder, with Wigan, Bolton and Stoke, as well as Scottish champions Rangers, already reportedly chasing his signature.

Gerard Houllier's side could be targeting Johnson as an alternative option to Blackpool captain Charlie Adam after Seasiders manager Ian Holloway insisted their initial £3.5million bid for the midfielder was 'insulting'.

Johnson, who can also play at left-back, is thought to come with a £500,000 price tag, but will be available on a free transfer in the summer should he see out his contract at Leeds.
