Leeds were thwarted in their pursuit of central midfield target Sammy Clingan, after making enquiries about the Coventry City captain, out of contract next summer, in the run-up to the deadline.Rumours abounded that cash-strapped City may be forced to let the Northern Ireland international leave. But the departure of central defender Ben Turner to Cardiff City and a sell-on clause following the big-money £8m transfer of Birmingham City and ex-Sky Blues centre-half Scott Dann to Blackburn Rovers is believed to have eased the pressure to sell, with boss Andy Thorn receiving reassurances that Clingan would stay.
And United’s hopes of a beat-the-deadline move for ex-loan full-back Eric Lichaj were scuppered after it was revealed the US international tore a thigh muscle playing for Aston Villa in their Carling Cup clash with Hereford United. However many fans will feel Leeds should have identified more targets and had a plan B for a club of this size it is simply not good enough.
