Mikael Forssell was flying back to England from international duty today in the hope of pushing through a move to Leeds United. The out-of-contract striker completed a two-game stint with Finland against the Netherlands last night and was due to jet back to Manchester this afternoon with a view to clarifying his immediate future. The 30-year-old trained with Leeds for two weeks last month and is keen to join on a full-time basis after ending a spell in the German Bundesliga with Hannover 96.His efforts at Thorp Arch caught the eye of manager Simon Grayson and the Leeds boss has not ruled out a deal despite admitting improvements to other areas of his squad were a greater priority.United are expected to enter the Football League’s emergency loan market when it opens tomorrow after the summer window closed without any additions to the five signings made by Grayson since the end of last term. A winger and a defender are high on Leeds’ list of priorities after their controversial sale of Max Gradel to St Etienne and a thwarted plan to recruit Eric Lichaj from Aston Villa.
But Forssell continues to interest United and the forward remains unattached despite receiving offers from a number of rival clubs.
The former Chelsea and Birmingham City forward followed his trial at Thorp Arch by linking up with Finland for their Euro 2012 qualifying fixtures in Moldova on Saturday and at home to Holland last night.
As a free agent he would be able to join an English club outside FIFA’s transfer window.
Grayson revealed last month that Forssell was “desperate” to agree terms with Leeds and said the forward saw his trial as a “big opportunity”.
However, United’s manager hinted ahead of the transfer deadline that his budget might dictate any attempt to add Forssell to his squad
